How to Create and Encrypt a ZIP File with 7-Zip
To create and encrypt a ZIP file is pretty simple. If you have important files taking up space on your computer, you can compress them into a ZIP file and protect them with a password using 7-Zip.
Steps to Create an Encrypted ZIP File
- Download and install 7-Zip.
- Create a folder, give it a name, and copy all your files into it.
- Right-click on the folder.
- Select 7-Zip from the context menu.
From the sub-menu, click on “Add to Archive…” as shown in the image below:
Encryption Settings
Inside the window that opens:
- Set Archive format to Zip.
- Leave Compression level at Normal (or adjust as needed).
- Check the option “Compress shared files”.
- Under Encryption:
- Enter and re-enter your password.
- Click OK to finalize (see image below).
Final Notes
Once complete, you’ll have an encrypted ZIP file. Note: the larger the files, the longer compression may take.
